How to read a Jeep VIN
Since the 2012 model year US-built Jeeps start with 1C4, the code for multipurpose vehicles of the company now registered as FCA US. Older Jeeps carry 1J4 or 1J8. Jeeps from Mexico start with 3C4, and the models built in Italy with ZAC.
The Gladiator pickup uses 1C6, the truck code, and that is the only thing that separates its VIN prefix from a Wrangler's.
Position 8 is the engine code and position 11 the plant. In the sample VIN 1C4HJXDG9JW100001, a 2018 Wrangler Unlimited Sport, the letter W stands for Toledo. A 2012 Grand Cherokee with C in that position was built in Detroit.
