How to read a GMC VIN
GMC uses General Motors codes with its own third character. 1GT is a US-built pickup and 1GK an SUV. 2GT and 2GK are Canada, 3GT and 3GK Mexico. Chassis cabs and cutaway vans sold as incomplete vehicles use 1GD.
A GMC and its Chevrolet twin differ only in that third character: a Sierra starts with 1GT where a Silverado has 1GC, a Yukon with 1GK where a Tahoe has 1GN.
Position 8 is the engine code and position 11 the plant. In the sample VIN 1GKS2BKC9FR100001, a 2015 Yukon SLT, the letter R stands for Arlington, Texas. A 2019 Sierra with Z in that position was built in Fort Wayne.

GMC VIN questions
1GT for US-built pickups and 1GK for SUVs. A leading 2 means Canada and a 3 Mexico. Chassis cabs use 1GD.
Only in the third character. The rest follows the same General Motors scheme because the vehicles share plants and platforms.
Usually yes. The trim is part of the description section in positions 4 to 8, and the decoder shows it when the manufacturer has filed it, as in Sierra Denali or Yukon SLT.
The 8th. The decoder turns it into displacement, cylinders and fuel type, which also tells a gas truck from a diesel.
