How to read a Audi VIN

Audi uses very few manufacturer codes. WAU is a passenger car and WA1 an SUV. TRU is Audi's code for cars built in Hungary, and WUA and WU1 belong to Audi Sport GmbH, which builds the RS models.

Positions 7 and 8 carry the model code Audi uses internally. In the sample VIN WAUENAF47HN000001, a 2017 A4, they read F4, the code of that A4 generation.

Position 11 is the plant: the N in the sample VIN is Neckarsulm, and a 2013 Q5 with A in that position was built in Ingolstadt. Audis sold in Europe often have a Z in positions 4 to 6 and in position 9 where US cars have real data, so they decode only partly.

Audi manufacturer codes

The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier. These are the codes registered with NHTSA for vehicles sold as Audi.

Audi VIN questions

WAU for cars, WA1 for SUVs, TRU for cars built in Hungary, and WUA or WU1 for RS models from Audi Sport.

Audi fills unused positions with Z on cars built for Europe, including position 9, where US cars carry a check digit. Such a VIN decodes to the manufacturer, year and plant, but usually not to the exact model.

For cars sold in the US, yes: the drive type is part of what Audi files, and the result shows all-wheel drive when it applies.

The 11th character is the plant. The decoder shows the city, for example Ingolstadt or Neckarsulm.
