How to read a Nissan VIN
Nissans built in the United States start with 1N4 for cars, 1N6 for trucks and 5N1 for SUVs. JN1 and JN8 are cars and SUVs from Japan, and 3N1 is a car from Mexico.
A few Nissans were built by other companies and keep those codes: KNM is registered to Renault Samsung in South Korea, SJK to Nissan's UK plant, and 4N2 to Ford, which built a Nissan minivan in the 1990s.
Position 4 is the engine type and position 11 the plant. In the sample VIN 1N4AL3APXFC100001, a 2015 Altima, the letter C stands for Smyrna, Tennessee. The X in position 9 is not a typo: the check digit can be 0 to 9 or X.
