How to read a Toyota VIN

The first character tells you where a Toyota comes from. J means Japan (JTD, JTE, JTM and other JT codes). 4T and 5T are US plants: 4T1 is Kentucky, 5TF Texas, 5TD Indiana, 5YF Mississippi. 2T is Canada and 3T is Mexico.

A few Toyotas are built by partners and carry the partner's code. JF1 is registered to Subaru, 3MY to Mazda's plant in Mexico, 7MU to the Mazda Toyota joint plant in the US, and WZ1 to BMW AG.

Position 11 is the plant. In the sample VIN 4T1BF1FK9CU100001, a 2012 Camry, the letter U stands for Georgetown, Kentucky. A 2015 RAV4 with W in that position was built in Woodstock, Canada, and a 2019 Tundra with X in San Antonio.

Toyota VIN questions

JT for vehicles built in Japan, 4T and 5T for US plants, 2T for Canada and 3T for Mexico. The third character separates cars, SUVs and trucks.

Look at the first character: J is Japan, 1, 4, 5 and 7 are the United States, 2 is Canada and 3 is Mexico. The decoder also shows the plant city from the 11th character.

Some models are built by a partner and keep that manufacturer's identifier in the first three characters. The make in the decoded result is still Toyota.

Yes. The fuel type and engine come from positions 4 to 8, the same way as for any other Toyota sold in the US.
