How to read a Ford VIN

Ford VINs from US plants start with 1F: 1FA for passenger cars, 1FM for SUVs and 1FT for pickups. The same letters follow a 2 for Canada and a 3 for Mexico, so 2FM is a Canadian-built SUV and 3FA a car from Mexico.

Some Fords sold in the US were built elsewhere and keep their own codes: NM0 is Ford Otosan in Turkey, WF0 is Ford-Werke in Germany and MAJ is Ford India. 1ZV belongs to AutoAlliance International, a joint plant that built the Mustang for several years.

Position 8 is the engine code on a Ford, which makes it the character to check when two trims look the same from outside. Position 11 is the plant: in the sample VIN 1FTFW1ET9DFC10312, a 2013 F-150, the letter F stands for Dearborn. A 2018 Mustang with 5 in that position came from Flat Rock.

Ford VIN questions

1FA, 1FM and 1FT for cars, SUVs and trucks built in the United States. Replace the 1 with 2 for Canada or 3 for Mexico. Imported models use codes such as NM0 (Turkey), WF0 (Germany) and MAJ (India).

The 8th. Ford uses a single character there for the engine, and the decoder turns it into displacement, cylinder count and fuel type.

The 11th character is the plant code. Enter the VIN and the result shows the plant city and country, for example Dearborn, Flat Rock or Kansas City.
